Brian McClure - Honorary Secretary York RUFC

Brian McClure - Honorary Secretary York RUFC

Paul Simpson21 Feb - 21:03

York RUFC mourns the loss of one of its greatest supporters.

It is with immense sadness that we must report the passing away of one of our staunchest, most loyal and well-loved personalities within the Club.

On Tuesday Feb 18th Brian McClure was the victim of a hit and run in Castleford and sadly passed away at the scene.

For many members of York RUFC, past and present there will be fond memories of Brian throughout all ages. Originally a player for York in the 1970’s, he has continued to be involved with the club ever since. For the1st XV he ran the line for many years, always keen to get his boots on when he could and more recently on the sidelines watching 1’s, 2’s, Women and Social games. He was also hugely supportive and passionate about the Junior Section and was a regular attender of matches with a keen eye on developing talent always happy to chat with spectators, parents and players at whatever level they were playing. There was rarely a Sunday morning when he wouldn’t be seen supporting the various teams in Yorkshire cup games or Friendlies. He took particular pleasure is watching his son Neil play in the York shirt and more recently he has had great enjoyment in watching his Grandson, Alfie who is thoroughly enjoying playing in the U7’s.

People might be surprised to learn that Brian took the role of Honorary Secretary in 1987 and was approaching his 40th year in post. A mark of his excellence is the quiet way that everything ‘just happened’ and many people will have engaged with him as his role covered the distribution and management of International RFU tickets.

On a wider basis Brian was extremely well known throughout the Yorkshire Rugby Community. He was a key interface between clubs for fixtures and was always a font of knowledge willing to give his wise words of wisdom to solve any issues that might arise.

Many of us will be looking wistfully at the touchline over the coming weeks, expecting to see Brian smiling and watching the game before we fill our minds with fond memories of a wonderful man and a much loved member of the Club.

He leaves behind his loving wife Margaret, daughter Kathryn, son Neil and the wider family.

Details of the funeral service will be made available as and when they are released.
