Teams of current and former York and Pocklington players will line up at Percy Road on Saturday (27 April) to remember Nigel Elliot, who had such a major influence at both clubs, and to raise money for a special charity.
The Nigel Elliot Memorial Game between a Pocklington Select XV and a York Select XV, kick off 2.30 pm, and sponsored by Mulgrave Properties, will bring together players from Pocklington teams coached by Nigel and their York counterparts who they played against through the age groups. Both sides will contain a number of first teamers, plus others who have moved away from the area but are coming back specially for the day. The Pocklington side will be led by Nigel's son, Dan, while in the York ranks will be Nigel's nephew and current York 1st XV threequarter, Sam Elliot.
Nigel starred at fly half and captained York RUFC in the 1960s and 70s, was club president in the 1990s and was one of the original founders of The Quality Street Gang. He also mentored numerous future York players as a local schoolteacher. After moving to Everingham, where he became a leading villager, he developed dual allegiance as a Pocklington junior parent and coach. His talent and wisdom transferred seamlessly into coaching and numerous of his proteges went on to gain representative honours.
It will therefore be a fitting memorial when sides from the two clubs where he was so involved in six decades come together to remember him and raise money for PSC Support UK, the charity that helps the sufferers of, and research into, primary sclelrosing cholangitis - the rare immune-mediated liver disease that attacked Nigel in later life.
Pocklington club president, Paul Rhodes, who has been involved in setting up the game and was a fellow parent with some of Nigel's teams, said: "Nigel was a top guy, player and coach. He made a real difference to so many young players; but it was always a bit special when one of his Pocklington sides met York, so I can't think of a better way of remembering him than for a team of players that he coached to turn out against their old rivals from York."
The game kicks off at Percy Road at 2.30 pm and there is a barbeque and charity raffle throughout the afternoon and evening to raise funds for PSC Support UK. Everyone is welcome to come down on Saturday, but if anyone cannot make it on the day then Dan Elliot has created a JustGiving page to enable online donations in memory of Nigel, go to:
