The last time York Women played Wetherby was at the ‘Halifax Sevens Festival of Rugby’ as a warm up prior to the new season. That day Wetherby went away with a win but add a full fifteen to the pitch and it was York who came out as winners today. In what was a great development game for all involved.

A windy day swept the ground but that didn’t hold back either side from producing a terrific game as the final whistle went. Squad numbers were good as each side were destined to let their selection develop as the season draws to a close. For York both wingers, Katherine Hanlon and Claudia Francesca had a high-quality match. Months of training and appearances had really paid off with sterling performances from both, who added their names onto the score board in true winger style.And with veteran forward, Kel Feetenby-Gare taking a knock after twenty minutes it was left to Carly Baker to fill the void. And how well she did. Having only recently appeared to train late on in this season, it is so pleasing to see just how well Carly has advanced. With sixty minutes under her belt and dominating the back of the tackle area with some useful passing skills, it was a game she will probably never forget. As halftime approached York had created a steady lead with tries from Becky Coultish and Ellie Seagrave. With Jess Hall nailing her opportunity from the tee, Wetherby also added a converted try for themselves after some excellent work, to keep themselves in the game.

The second half produced more of the same from York, who continue to keep on creating chances and to score. Centres Alex Johnston and Robyn Davies both scored to keep the momentum going. And never did Wetherby show wanting, their drive and resolve were plain to see. Especially late on when their scrum half ran the best part of the field to tie down our winger with a great cover tackle, in an act of pure brilliance.

A worthwhile day for both sides and thanks to the referee, who manages our games so well.
